Weather: cool and misty in the morning -- hazy in the afternoon -- little wind

Other notes: not a single migrant bird around -- some species seen nearly every year previously were not found this trip (those marked "NONE!" below) -- White Pines all had small (3-4 cm) cones (second year in a row)

Hairy Woodpecker ***a pair in trees behind Wright -- they seemed a shade bigger than those near Chapel Hill and had slightly deeper calls -- pure white outer tail feathers seen clearly!

Purple Finch *at least 3 flying over and calling -- a northern species rarely found nesting in the southern Appalachians -- these birds might have nested somewhere nearby since it was much too early for wintering birds to have arrived from the north -- first time found on a BIOL 72L trip in September!
