Vertebrate Field Zoology Lab -- BIOL 277L

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT

WEEKEND FIELD TRIPS

This lab includes a weekend field trip to the coast in November.   This trip counts as four labs (each section has three Fridays free to compensate for weekend time).

BASIC RULES FOR ALL TRIPS

  1. Everybody uses seat-belts!   Safety is everybody's first priority.

  2. Everything -- indoors and outdoors -- is left the way we find it -- or cleaner!

  3. Everybody helps with chores and with staying on schedule!

WHEN AND WHERE

Weekend trips leave from Nash Parking Lat at 1:00 PM on Friday.   Plan to arrive ahead of time to load your gear -- we leave on time!

We return to Coker Hall about 8:00 PM on Sunday (usually somewhat earlier from the mountains, sometimes a little later from the coast).

WHAT TO BRING

Always wear long pants in the field -- for protection against poison ivy, brambles and minor scratches, and bites (mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks are possible).   We proceed with field work in any weather -- bring hat, jacket, and rain gear as appropriate.

For the trip to the coast, bring hat, jacket, and rain gear regardless of the weather in Chapel Hill.   Also bring a sleeping bag (or light blanket) and a spare towel.   Carry any personal necessities with you -- in a small backpack.   Otherwise, bring as little as possible.

EXPENSES

Department vehicles provide all transportation.   Costs of group meals and lodging are shared by all participants.   Exact costs are calculated after both sections have returned.

Coast trip shared costs: about $65.   Room about $45 per person for two nights (shared suites in a motel), food about $20 (six meals).   You also buy extra drinks and snacks.

ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADES

Grades will be based on . . .

  1. cooperation in following the Basic Rules above (1/3)
  2. participation (paying attention, contributing) (1/3)
  3. presentations and assignments for class discussion (1/3)

ABSENCES

If for any reason you decide not to go on a field trip, consult the TA about an equivalent make-up assignment.
