Waterfowl impoundments and adjacent fields, pond on Old Oxford Road

Light snow began as we arrived, little wind, temperature in upper 20's

Great Blue Heron 1 at the edge of a small pond
ANSERIFORMES
Canada Goose 20 on bank of small pond
Mallard 4 flushed with other ducks
American Black Duck 30 flushed with other ducks
American Wigeon 200 flushed from impoundments
Green-winged Teal 10 flushed with other ducks
Ring-necked Duck 30 flushed from impoundments bu several pairs allowed us to look at them briefly
Redhead 1 male on a small pond allowed close looks in the snow
Hooded Merganser 14 including at least 4 flushed from impoundments and later 9 females and 1 male on a small pond in the snow
CHARADRIIFORMES
Ring-billed Gull 100 mostly adults, some second-winter birds, mostly around shopping centers

Mourning Dove 1

Eastern Phoebe 1 crossed the road

Dark-eyed Junco 50 in several flocks along roadsides
Song Sparrow 3 in bushes beside roads
White-throated Sparrow 50 in bushes along roads, also good views of birds feeding in path

NOTES

Snowy conditions cut this trip short.

We had a good look at Hooded Mergansers and a fine male Redhead, one of the scarcer ducks in North Carolina.

I hope we are paying our dues for a really good treat pretty soon!
