east side of Seaforth Point, Big Woods Road
Habitats -- open lake, wooded shores, lawns and trees, beaver impoundment
Weather -- cloudy, cold (20-30 degrees F), gusty NW wind

PODICIPEDIFORMES
Pied-billed Grebe 5 scattered on lake
PELICANIFORMES
Double-crested Cormorant 8 including one close to the road at Northeast Creek
CICONIIFORMES
Great Blue Heron one
Turkey Vulture 15 soaring early on a gusty day
Black Vulture one flapping heavily along Mt Carmel Church Road near Chapel Hill
ANSERIFORMES
Canada Goose 4 on a farm pond (presumably wild)
Mallard 5 on a farm pond, 2 females, 3 males, no definite pairing
Bufflehead 6 on a farm pond, 2 males with irridescent purple in the sunlight and coral legs, 4 females, all diving repeatedly
Hooded Merganser 2 females on a farm pond, 19 males and females keeping near a sheltered shore of the lake
FALCONIFORMES
Red-tailed Hawk one adult perched along Big Woods Road
Red-shouldered Hawk one adult with banded tail, dropped to ground several times at edge of pine woodland, apparently hunting
CHARADRIIFORMES
Ring-billed Gull 300, some scattered but mostly in large flocks on the lake
Bonaparte's Gull 150 in a sheltered cove with a group of ring-bills (but no other gulls)
COLUMBIFORMES
Rock Dove about a dozen flew under the bridge at Northeast Creek
Mourning Dove only 2
CORACIIFORMES
Belted Kingfisher none!
PICIFORMES
Downy Woodpecker one with a flock of chickadees and kinglets
Northern Flicker several scattered, often feeding on the ground on lawns
PASSERIFORMES
FLYCATCHER FAMILY
Eastern Phoebe beside the lake
JAY AND CROW FAMILY
American Crow 20, pairs and small family groups, including two groups feeding on deer carcasses beside the road
Blue Jay 2
CHICKADEE FAMILY
Carolina Chickadee 4, including at least 2 in a flock beside the road
Tufted Titmouse 4, including a pair in the same flock
NUTHATCH FAMILY
Brown-headed Nuthatch one bird on the trunks of pines at Seaforth Point
WREN FAMILY
Carolina Wren one sang just a few songs -- too cold for more!
MIMIC FAMILY
Mockingbird one or two
THRUSH FAMILY
American Robin 50, often in flocks near lawns
Hermit Thrush 10, along grassy shoulders in wooded areas, some allowed good looks
Eastern Bluebird 4 along Big Woods Road
KINGLET FAMILY
Golden-crowned Kinglet one female in a chickadee-kinglet flock allowed nice views of her crown
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 5, including at least 3 in the chickadee-kinglet flock
WOOD-WARBLER FAMILY
Yellow-rumped Warbler few, including one or two in the chickadee-kinglet flock
CARDINAL FAMILY
Northern Cardinal 5
SPARROW FAMILY
Dark-eyed Junco 30 in flocks at the edges of woods
Song Sparrow 10, scattered with other sparrows
White-throated Sparrow 20 in brushy areas
FINCH FAMILY
none!

NOTES

A cold, windy day kept the birds under cover.   We had great chances to study the kinglets, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, and Bonaparte's Gulls.
