Occurrence, distribution, and habitats of birds in Loreto come from our own observations, records assembled especially by J. Álvarez Alonso, published information (mostly summarized by Schulenberg et al., 2010, Birds of Peru), and detailed reports from other observers. They include several species (shown in red) not otherwise reported for Peru.

COLUMN 1 indicates the principal habitat of each species:

  • v = seasonally flooded forest (varzea and others);
  • t = upland forest (tierra firme);
  • w = forests on white sands;
  • (w) = including other poor soils;
  • i = islands of major rivers;
  • a = aquatic habitats (lakes, rivers, herbaceous marshes);
  • (a) = trees and shrubs at the edges of aquatic habitats;
  • o = open areas (trees absent or widely separated);
  • u = near towns or cities;
  • if there is no indication, the species occurs in several habitats including secondary or transitional forests and at their edges.
COLUMN 2 indicates migrant species:
  • b = boreal migrant,
  • a = austral migrant,
  • t = intratropical migrant,
  • x = vagrant
COLUMN 3 indicates the range of each species within Loreto, especially with respect to major rivers. For example:
  • a-n indicates distribution only north of the Amazonas;
  • n-e, only east of the Napo;
  • a-n/a-s, distinct subspecies north and south of the Amazonas;
  • m (Maranon), h (Huallaga), u (Ucayali);
  • n, e, s, w, indicate distribution only in northern, eastern, southern, or western Loreto;
  • j, occurrence near Jeberos.
  • […] indicates absence in a part of Loreto.
  • (...) indicates a limitation approximately but not exactly at a river.
COLUMN 4 indicates an extralimital range to the north, east, south, or west (n, e, s, w).
  • These notations are provided only for Passeriformes and only for those extending in only one or two directions from Loreto.
