COURSE AIMS
This lab provides direct experience with a variety of vertebrates in the field. We will practice techniques important for the study and conservation of living vertebrates in natural conditions.
This lab also provides a chance to experience one of the world's great vertebrate spectacles, the migratory waterfowl of coastal North Carolina.
All students who have taken at least one previous Biology course are welcome, although juniors and seniors have preference!
WEEKEND FIELD TRIP
This lab includes a weekend field trip -- in mid-November. Students must plan ahead to fit this trip into their schedules.
Transportation for this trip is provided by Biology Department vehicles.
The costs of rooms and most meals are shared by the participants (in recent years not more than $60 per person for the two-day weekend).
FRIDAY LABS
In addition to the weekend field trip, lab exercises in the field are scheduled during the semester on Friday afternoons, 1:00-3:50 (or a little later to allow for transportation delays).
To participate in these field trips, students must plan to spend the full alloted time for labs.
LIMITATIONS ON ENROLLMENT
Enrollment is limited to two sections of 9
students each, so everyone can see the animals.
To give all students a chance to enroll in this lab, enrollment
requires permission of the instructor.
If you are interested, please send me an email before seniors begin to
register in March . . .
Send your email to rhwiley [at] email.unc.edu
Enrollment decisions will be made in two stages -- after seniors have
enrolled and after juniors have enrolled. At those times I will
admit as many students as possible.
If difficult decisions have to be made, students who have contacted me
earlier will have precedence!
