Next offered in fall semester 2009 (not in 2008!)

[For important information about registration -- click here!]

COURSE AIMS

This course uses class discussion to evaluate recent findings and controversies about the evolution of social behavior and communication. We read articles in primary scientific journals as well as scientific reviews of key issues.

It also serves to introduce the social behavior of a wide variety of animals -- including primates, cetaceans, other mammals, birds, frogs, fish, and a variety of insects.

TOPICS

Topics include adaptations for communication, signal detection, cooperation, sexual selection, honesty in communication, culture in animal societies, and aspects of human behavior.

REQUIREMENTS

In addition to reports on readings and participation in discussions, each student writes a paper and makes a presentation on a topic of his or her choice.
